With 214,000 inhabitants, Erfurt is considered the largest city in Thuringia and one of the federal state's major centres. The capital of the Free State of Thuringia has an area of 269.91 km². The cityscape is shaped by historic buildings from the Wilhelminian period and with a population density of 792 inhabitants per sqkm, has a hilly and intensively farmed character. The high quality of life in the city is mainly attributed to the many shopping opportunities, gastronomy, cultural and sporting facilities, as well as its child-friendliness and good public transport connections.

Economy

Erfurt is an important business location with well-known companies employing around 140,000 people in over 14,000 businesses. They are primarily active in mechanical and plant engineering, horticulture, media and creative industries and the food industry. Well-known companies include Redcoon, Zalando, Computacenter, Mediengruppe Thüringen, KNV, X-Fab, Siemens, Schuler, Qundis, Ibykus, Melexis and Deutsche Post DHL.

Bus lines 15, 20, 50 and trams 1 and 5 provide access to the theatres, cinemas, shopping centres on the Anger, the main railway station and the historical centre. In summer, Nordstrand is a good place to swim. This flooded gravel pit is located in the eastern part of Johannesvorstadt.
