The independent city of Kempten is located in the heart of the Allgäu region in Germany. With almost 70,0000 inhabitants, it is the second largest city in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia. The city has been mentioned in ancient writings and is thus considered one of the oldest cities in Germany. 155 quarters divide the municipality, which has a total area of 63.28 km². The Federal Employment Agency of Kempten-Memmingen has its headquarters in the city. Furthermore, there is a clinic, a voluntary fire brigade as well as nine general schools, a university and several vocational schools. Retail trade and media are among the most important industries in the city. Kempten is considered one of the cities with the highest concentration of shopping centres. Numerous well-known department stores are located in the town, including C&A and Quelle. In the media sector, Allgäu newspaper publishing house, the local television station TV Allgäu and the radio station RSA are located in the city.
