Property location

Macro-location

The Baltic Sea island of Rügen is located in the northeast of Germany. It is both the largest and most populous island in the country and has also become the most popular island among Germans in recent years. In the meantime, Rügen records almost six million overnight stays per year. Tourism is by far the most important sector of the economy. It brings lucrative investments and provides an almost ideal infrastructure.

Especially in the summer months, Rügen attracts visitors with its fine sandy beaches and a wide range of leisure and cultural activities. The coastal landscape with its lagoons and coves is varied and characterised by well-known resorts such as Binz, Sellin and Göhren. The main focus in the quiet hinterland is on agriculture.

Sassnitz is the most important economic location of the island. The town in the northeast of the island lives from traditional chalk mining and fishing. In addition, Germany’s third-largest Baltic Seaport is located in the Mukran district, with international ferry connections and an annual freight traffic volume of around five tonnes.

Rügen has a ramified rail network, extensive bus and cycle path networks as well as a high level of shipping traffic. The connection to the mainland is provided by the Rugen Causeway near Stralsund, which was completed in 1937, and the Rügen Bridge, which was built in 2007.

Micro-location

Ranzow is a small district of Lohme, an old fishing village in the north of the Jasmund peninsula. The surrounding area is characterised by a hilly forest landscape consisting mainly of dense beech forests. It is now a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and part of the Jasmund National Park, which covers about 3,000 hectares and is virtually car-free. It begins directly at the eastern edge of Ranzow and offers a large number of hiking trails. The most important destination in the National Park is usually the Königsstuhl, the most famous rock on the chalk coast of Rügen. It can be reached on foot from Ranzow in about 30 minutes. However, the coast about 800 metres from Ranzow is also steep and marked by weather-related erosion and landslides.

Ranzow itself is a former manor village which was first mentioned in 1314. The manor house, which still stands and has since been renovated, was used for military purposes until 1991 and now houses a hotel. In addition, an 18-hole golf course, a horse farm and one of the numerous megalithic tombs on Rügen can be found in the local area.
