The town of Putbus is located in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The town has a population of about 4,500 and was founded in 1810. It has been an officially recognised health resort since 1997. Putbus is the youngest town on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. Lauterbach, the oldest seaside resort on Rügen, is located in the town. The town is also called “the White Town on the island of Rügen” due to the impressive white façades of the houses.

The town is located approximately eight kilometres from the town of Bergen auf Rügen and is very easy to reach by car and public transport. Putbus has a railway station on the Bergen auf Rügen-Lauterbach Mole line. The connection to the bus service via line 30 between Bergen and Stralsund also provides good access to the town.

Boat trips for tourists or excursions are available in the former fishing village of Lauterbach.

The sights of Putbus include the palace gardens, the orangery, the palace church and the Circus. This square forms the central area of the town, which consists of a circular street uniting eight streets in the centre.

The most important economic sector of the town is tourism. There are still many small and medium-sized enterprises from various sectors such as crafts, agriculture and fishing in the holiday region. There are many small businesses in the town, such as a tackle dealer, florists, clothes shops, a photographer, a hairdressing salon and DIY stores.
